A new year = a new (or updated) you, right? How many times have you had high hopes that this would be the case? And how many times do you find yourself at the end of another year looking back and realizing that you never did take the time to make the changes you wanted to?
Don’t let this next year fall short. With New Year’s resolutions abundant, make a promise to yourself that this year you won’t just say you’re going to eat better/exercise/update your look/practice better skincare (and the list goes on), you’re going to do it! Follow these steps to make sure that 2016 is your best year yet!
- Find out what’s holding you back
What obstacles are between you and your goal? Take the time to really think about what stops you before you even start and put into place steps to remove that obstacle. If it’s time, set aside a dedicated time every day. Is it a lack of accountability? Find someone who is doing well with what you want to change and ask them to check in with you every couple of days to see how you are doing.
- Set a realistic goal
It’s best to think of goals as stairs. You can’t bypass the whole flight to get to the top. You need to take each step at a time. If you try to start with your ultimate goal, you will fail. Figure out what small goals need to be accomplished first in order to get where you want to go. When you give yourself realistic goals, you will not only be able to work through them, but you will give yourself a chance to celebrate each accomplishment along the way, which will in turn motivate you to keep going.
- Increase your goal once the routine is set
Once you’ve gotten the hang of your new routine, don’t forget to keep moving upward. For example, when starting a new exercise regimen, sometimes you get so excited that you’re able to make it through the routine or class without wanting to pass out, that you forget to keep increasing the intensity. As you improve, keep pushing yourself to take the next step.
- Grant yourself some grace
It’s easy to become discouraged when you fall short. Did you give in and eat something that you’ve been avoiding? Were you too lazy to work out one morning? Don’t allow the occasional miss to completely derail you. Some days you need to allow yourself a free pass and re-focus for tomorrow.
- Remind yourself often why this is important
When you’re in the trenches of working hard, it’s easy to forget why you’re doing it in the first place. Remind yourself regularly that the hard work now will pay off in the long run. Write out your goal and post it somewhere that you’ll see often; on the fridge, bathroom mirror or as a reminder in your phone calendar.
