Options for fat removal are constantly evolving, and many patients call our office looking to utilize the newest technology. When it comes to choosing between tumescent liposuction vs Smartlipo, most people want to know which procedure offers the least amount of downtime and fast, noticeable results. However, not all patients are candidates for every procedure.
At the Quatela Center, we offer all available options for liposuction, which include laser, ultrasonic, and tumescent. Read on to learn more and better understand traditional liposuction and SmartLipo.
What is liposuction? What is Smartlipo?
Liposuction uses a tumescent fluid and a small cannula to remove unwanted, stubborn fat that resists diet and exercise. It is not a solution for weight loss. Liposuction can eliminate excess subcutaneous fat from many areas of the body, but it’s most often used on the hips, flanks, thighs, abdomen, back, and arms.
Smartlipo is laser-assisted liposuction, which means it uses laser energy to break up the fat so that it can be removed more easily. The heat of the laser also has a slight skin-tightening effect.
Liposuction alone is generally not the best choice for those with skin laxity issues, such as after pregnancy significant weight loss. In those cases, a tummy tuck combined with liposuction achieves better results. We talk more about this issue in our related blog post and in the Instagram post below:

How are liposuction and SmartLipo the same?
Tumescent liposuction and Smartlipo actually share many benefits. Both traditional lipo and SmartLipo offer:
- Small incisions
- Minimal scarring
- Nominal downtime and recovery
What additional features does Smartlipo offer?
Traditional liposuction is an excellent option for many people, but Smartlipo offers some additional benefits, including:
- It may or may not require anesthesia depending on the area treated.
- Its laser causes surrounding blood vessels to coagulate, diminishing blood loss.
- It stimulates collagen to mildly tighten the skin.

Each patient requires a personal consultation appointment with Dr. Koenig or Dr. Amalfi before a procedure is scheduled. At this appointment, your plastic surgeon will determine which liposuction technique will work best for the area you would like to treat to give you the results you are looking for.
