Whether it’s a tummy tuck, breast augmentation, rhinoplasty or facelift, plastic surgery has never been more accessible to improve your appearance and self-image. For many of our patients, their cosmetic procedure goes far beyond the physical changes and is truly a life-transforming experience.
While plastic surgery is more popular than ever, it’s important to remember that all surgery carries some degree of risk and one of the most crucial elements of a successful outcome is your choice of surgeon.
Expertise is everything
Your surgeon’s experience, training and judgement will all impact the outcomes of your surgery, as will their openness to discuss your concerns, goals and motivations prior to surgery.
“While cosmetic surgery is usually a positive experience, it can be devastating if you fall into the hands of an inexperienced or unqualified surgeon,” says Dr. William J. Koenig, double-board certified plastic surgeon at the Quatela Center for Plastic Surgery.
“While it may be tempting to choose your surgeon based on cost, it is important to remember the price will reflect the experience and seniority of the surgeon along with the quality of the facility and staff. Ultimately, cosmetic surgery is an investment in your body, and by choosing an experienced surgeon you are less likely to experience complications and revision surgeries.”
Make sure to ask your surgeon and their nursing team as many questions as possible in your consultation and pre-op appointment, including possible risks and limitations. Request for Before and After photos to manage expectations of how your body will likely look and read online patient reviews. Most important of all, choose a doctor that has many years of experience and who is a specialist in your procedure of choice.
